Chargeable Weight Calculator
In freight shipping—especially air and sea—what your cargo weighs isn’t always what you pay for. Instead, carriers charge based on chargeable weight, which compares actual (gross) weight and volumetric (dimensional) weight. You’re billed on whichever is greater.
This ensures carriers account for both mass and space—key for efficient transport.
How Is Chargeable Weight Calculated?
Chargeable weight is determined by comparing:
⦁ Gross Weight (Actual Weight) : The physical weight of your cargo, including packaging.
⦁ Volumetric Weight (Dimensional Weight) : How much space your cargo takes up.
The higher of the two becomes the chargeable weight.
Chargeable Weight Formula – by Transport Mode
⦁ Air Freight :
Volumetric Weight (kg) = (L × W × H in cm) / 6,000
(IATA standard divisor for air cargo is 6,000)
Example:
⦁ Box size : 120 × 80 × 70 cm
⦁ Gross Weight: 40 kg
⦁ Volumetric Weight: (120×80×70)/6000 = 112 kg
⦁ Chargeable Weight : 112 kg (since it's higher than 40 kg)
⦁ Express Couriers (e.g., DHL, FedEx) :
Volumetric Weight = (L × W × H in cm) / 5,000
(They use a different divisor for smaller, time-sensitive shipments.)
⦁ Sea Freight (LCL) :
For ocean cargo, 1 CBM = 1,000 kg is the industry rule.
⦁ If 1 CBM < 1,000 kg → billed by volume
⦁ If 1 CBM > 1,000 kg → billed by weight
